Thoughts on Interaction Models

June 2026

A research agenda for interaction models — exploring how foundation models can move beyond passive query-response cycles into dynamic, uncertainty-aware reasoning partners.

Interactive Agents & Continuous Reasoning

Modern language models operate predominantly in static turn-taking paradigms. However, real-world scientific inquiry requires continuous background synthesis: speculating, fetching structured evidence, and refining intermediate hypotheses asynchronously.

Calibrated Interruption & Abstention

When should an AI agent interrupt the human expert? The key challenge lies in uncertainty calibration — knowing when confidence is low enough to seek guidance without creating cognitive fatigue. Grounding decisions in structured knowledge representations and conformal bounds provides the necessary theoretical safeguards.
